Costa Rica delivered an incredible variety of birdlife, but the toucans and aracaris were some of the most memorable. Their oversized bills, vivid colors, and expressive personalities made them as entertaining to watch as they were to photograph. From the smaller, social aracaris to the bold yellow-throated and brightly colored keel-billed toucans, each species brought something different—sometimes calm, sometimes chaotic, and often full of character.

Even among Costa Rica’s incredible birdlife, these were some of the personalities that stayed with me the most.
